I recently had the privilege of learning Urdu from Dr. I. Alam, and it has been nothing short of transformative. In just 24 hours of meticulously planned online classes via Google Meet, I progressed from being a complete novice to confidently reading and writing Urdu—a feat I never thought possible in such a short time!

Having met Dr. Alam in 2009 for the first time at the American Embassy in New Delhi, where he was teaching Hindi and Urdu, gave me a great opportunity to know Dr. Alam a lot better. First I took his Hindi language courses and later I additionally took his Urdu classes. I took these classes over my whole assignment time of six years at the Embassy. He was not only a great teacher, but also a person whom I could ask any question about Indian culture and living situations. He was my teacher and mentor for the whole time. His class preparation was outstanding and he developed a curriculum, which was custom tailored to fit my requirements. Over time we developed a close friendship and he enriched my stay in India tremendously. He enlightened me in many ways, not only teaching me Hindi and Urdu but also giving me a great insight into the complex structure of Indian society.
I wish him all the best for his upcoming endeavors and knowing his dedication to teaching and understanding people, he will be very successful and an enrichment for every student taking his classes.
I have only been taking Hindi lessons with Dr. Alam for two months now, and I am thoroughly impressed with how much I’ve learned in that short time. Dr. Alam’s methods are the most effective language-learning techniques I’ve seen. I had two major concerns before starting. First, I was concerned that age would make it difficult for me to acquire a new language in the way I was able to when I was young. However, Dr. Alam systematizes language acquisition in a way that anyone can learn. I was also concerned that learning Hindi script would be impossible since I’ve only learned languages that use Latin script. However, Dr. Alam made that easy as well. By forcing me to engage in repeated readings of new words, he helped me to master reading. While Dr. Alam’s language teaching techniques have exceeded my expectations, one of the greatest aspects of my lessons has been what’s been offered beyond language instruction. Dr. Alam turns every lesson into an opportunity to acquire cultural and historical knowledge about India. These supplemental lessons show Dr. Alam’s keen understanding that language learning must extend beyond a mere understanding of grammar and vocabulary to ensure a nuanced understanding of other people and places.

Alam Sir is one of the best language teachers I have come across. He taught me Urdu most scientifically and interestingly. His patience and passion for the language encouraged me to work hard and learn the language.
Dr Alam is really a very good teacher, the best I've had in the six years I've been in India (he is my 4th). He has his own method of teaching that really works, in addition to his extensive knowledge of Indian culture and reality, which makes Hindi classes reach a higher level. He has been my Hindi teacher for the last year and, I hope, will remain so for much longer.
I absolutely loved learning Urdu from Alam sir. He is a fabulous teacher, he has been really patient and helpful throughout during our online classes! Moreover, he was available 24/7 if I ever had any doubts.
I was able to learn Urdu really quickly, like in a few weeks I was able to read and then moved to Urdu grammar and reading the BBC Urdu website.

A fantastic trainer, Dr. Alam not only 'teaches' you the language but he makes you 'experience' it through his deep insights and cultural perspectives. I had the privilege of attending his Urdu classes for almost an year and it was a remarkably enriching investment of my time. Thanks to his innovative ways and supreme patience to answer my persistent queries, I learnt the basics of Urdu in a fairly quick time, which helped me grow in my profession as an analyst. Equally enlightening were our conversations about the evolution of languages and cultures in India and the socio-political dynamics they shaped. Having come a long way up from his very humble origins, Dr. Alam is a profoundly learned man who knows the art of tailoring his message to the students' minds. As a person too, Dr. Alam is extremely affable and someone who believes in simple living and high thinking. Took a 1-to-1 Hindi class for ~6 days with Dr Alam (3-4hrs/day) and can definitely recommend it! …………….. Dr Alam was a great teacher who directly recognized my weaknesses. So the lessons were highly personalized and the atmosphere was great.

I want to thank Dr Alam, who gave me many explanations clarifying some key points about Hindi language, grammar and culture. We worked with very good books and various material and summaries about grammar, supplied by Dr Alam.Next step for me should be reading more and more often more and more long Hindi texts. I feel confident about that next step because Dr Alam gave me very good advices as learning vocabulary used in newspapers, reading the BBC website in Hindi and reading the "Intermediate Hindi reader" book which is good for a transition from knowing spoken Hindi to reading Hindi.
Studying Hindi with Dr Alam has been a very pleasant and very efficient experience.
